Obituary

HERKIMER - Herbert F. Parks Sr., 91, of Steuben Road, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 18, 2002, in Valley Health Services Inc. He was born Sept. 9, 1910, in Phelps, son of the late Murray and Electa Newman Parks. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was educated in Herkimer schools. On Sept. 19, 1929, he married Helen Collyer in the rectory of Annunciation Church, Ilion, a loving union of 55 years until her passing Oct. 30, 1986. For 25 years, Mr. Parks had owned and operated Parks Manufacturing Co. in Herkimer, retiring in 1975. He later became associated with A.J. Lumber Co. in Herkimer and in the 1980s drove bus for the Herkimer County Office of the Aging. During World War II he proudly served on the home front with the Army National Guard. Herb had a strong belief in God and lived a devoted Episcopal life. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family. He was the strength that held them together and was always there for them to lean on. Surviving are his devoted companion of 13 years, Ruth Morse; three sons, Herbert F. Parks Jr. and his wife Delores of Chicago, Ill, Harold and his wife Mildred Parks of Fort Herkimer and Phillip Parks of Herkimer; three daughters, Hilda Paddock of Ilion, Phyllis and her husband Ronald Buckner of Webster and Linda Philip of Melbourne, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife Helen, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon and Robert Parks; a sister, Mary Lowery; and two grandchildren. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. George Greene, rector of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Ilion, will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Union Local 2484 of the Herkimer Fire Department or MOVAC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
