Herbert F. Semit, age 91, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 10, 2016, in his home after an extended illness. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on June 24, 1924, in Herkimer, son of the late Fred and Lisa Semit. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1942. With great pride, on January 24, 1943 Herbert answered the call of his country enlisting in the US Army. He served with the 44th Chemical Laboratory Company and was honorably discharged on January 11, 1946 attaining the rank of Sergeant.
On June 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Geraldine A. Geraghty in Herkimer. For thirty-five years Mr. Semit worked as a machinist for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion where he had also served as Union President. Herbert was a former member of the American Legion Post in Herkimer. In his leisure time he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was a member and former president of the Buck Point Lodge in Gray. To all who knew him they will never forget a good natured and friendly man with exceptional leadership skills. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are his devoted wife of sixty-seven years Geraldine, three sons, Cary Semit and his wife Jacqueline of Herkimer, David Semit of Little Falls, William Semit and his wife Donna of Steuben Corners, a daughter, Linda Tarbox of Gloversville, son-in-law Ross Tarbox of Ephrata, a brother-in-law, John Geraghty of Rochester, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces including a special niece Joyce McCarthy, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Mark Semit, a brother, Carl Semit and sister Irma Paulsen.
A graveside funeral service with military honors accorded by the US Army will be on Saturday at 11:00 am in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Reverend Ann Zimmerman will officiate.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society or Hospice & Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the graveside service. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., Herkimer.
