Obituary

EAST HERKIMER-Hilda M. Rowan, age 92, of Folts Road passed away on Friday March 2, 2001 in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica, with her loving family at her side. She was born on July 4, 1908 in Hartwick, daughter of the late Clarence and Mabel Finch Chittenden. As a young girl her family moved to Ilion where she graduated from Ilion High School and furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce. On June 7, 1930 she married George F. Rowan in the First Baptist Church Ilion, a devoted union of over fifty years until his passing on January 1, 1981. Mrs. Rowan had first worked at the Herkimer Memorial Hospital. Then for twenty years with the Herkimer Central School District, where she served as treasurer of the school, retiring in 1973. She had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church Herkimer as well as the 100% Class of the church. She was a life member of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 Order of the Eastern Star and a member and past Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring and helpful person. She will be missed by many, especially her family. Surviving her are two sons, George E. Rowan, Robert J. and his wife Sylvia Rowan all of East Herkimer; a daughter, Lois and her husband Robert Wiegand of Frankfort, a sister; Louise Chittenden of Ocala, FL; fourteen grandchildren, Candace and her husband Gene Hnydowitz, Traci Lynch, Donna and her husband James Hartman, George E. Jr. and his wife Michele Rowan, Cregg A. Rowan, Lynda and her husband David Kuehnle, Cheryl and her husband John Wheelock, Patricia and her husband Todd Griffin, Thomas Wiegand, Timothy and his wife Stephanie Wiegand, Christine Rowan, Jeffery Rowan, John Rowan Teresa Rowan, twenty-four great grandchildren and several cousins. Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 9:00 AM in the First Baptist Church Herkimer with the Reverend Jeremy Spencer Church pastor officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, Herkimer, the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department or the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the third floor Orthopedic staff of Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center for the care and compassion shown to Hilda during her hospital stay. Members of the Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 O.E.S. are asked to meet at the funeral home on Monday evening at 7:00 PM for ritualistic services.
