RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Howard Bart VanderVeen age 83 of Perkins Road, town of Richfield passed away peacefully on Friday evening January 10, 2003 in his home with his loving family by his side.
Howard was born on November 27, 1919 in Werftermoter, Friesland, Holland son of the late Bart and Agne DeVries VanderVeen. He was educated in Holland and in American Correspondence Schools. An honorably discharged US Army Veteran he served our country during World War II.
His first marriage was to Evelyn Newenhuis who preceded him in death on July 17, 1972. Mr. VanderVeen had owned and operated the VanderVeen Construction Company located in both Michigan and Wisconsin. He retired in 1982.
On October 31, 1981 he married Jean Slager Andela in Richfield Springs. They have resided in the town of Richfield since 1984 coming here from Middleville, MI.
Mr. VanderVeen had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs where he had served as a Church Elder. He will be greatly missed by many especially his family.
Surviving are his wife of Twenty-one years Jean, one son; Sherman H. and his wife Laurie VanderVeen of Alvord, IA, two daughters; Kathleen and her husband Raymond Blough of Middleville, MI, Faye Ellen VanderVeen of Portland, OR, a step-son; James P. Andela of Richfield Springs, two step-daughters; June Baker of Richfield Springs, Barbara Skar of Grand Rapids, MI, two brothers and their wives; John B. and Dorthea VanderVeen of Alto, MI, Gustave B. and Jan VanderVeen of Holland, MI, two sisters; Theresa Los of Alkorn, WI, Angie Termaat of Rock Valley, IA, three grandchildren; Benjamin and Bethany Blough of Middleville, MI. Logan VanderVeen of Alvord, IA, twelve step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and first wife a Step-son Jeffery Andela preceded him in death in 1991.
Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11:00 AM in Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Kenneth Prol, Pastor will officiate. Mr. VanderVeen will be laid to rest in the Twilight Rest Cemetery, Monticello later this spring. The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs or the Catskill area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
