Obituary

HERKIMER-Ida May Bachelder age 98 of 690 West German Street entered into eternal rest on Monday evening November 28, 2005 in Valley Health Services Inc. She was born on August 13, 1907 in Lancaster, PA, daughter of the late Herbert Walter and Flora McPhetres Bachelder. With her parents, Ida May came to Herkimer when she was three years old. A graduate of Herkimer High School she furthered her education at Geneseo State Teachers College and had received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Syracuse University. For forty-two years she was an Elementary School Teacher in the Little Falls Central School retiring in 1970. She had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church, where she had served as a Deacon, was secretary of the Herkimer Reformed Church Women and various other capacities in the church circle. Miss Bachelder was a world traveler and had drove to Alaska when it was pioneer country in 1957. She had a true sense of community and enjoyed the many activities she participated in. She was a Past President of the Herkimer County Home Auxiliary, a charter member of the Herkimer County Meals on Wheels Program, a Blood Bank Registrar for the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, a member of the Herkimer Progressive Club, a fifty-year member of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and National AARP. In 1977 she was designated as Herkimer County Senior Citizen of the Year. To all who knew her they will remember her quick wit, warm sense of humor and her caring way. She will be truly missed. Surviving her are a niece, Janet Hollabaugh of PA, a nephew James Howland of Washington, DC, one cousin, Lois Harris of MD, dearest friend Janet Bouck of Ilion and her extended family the Staff of Valley Health Services. Funeral service will take place on Saturday at 3:00 pm in the Herkimer Reformed Church. The Reverend Mark Anderson, Pastor will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will be private. Calling hours will be on Saturday from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc. 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Ida May was especially grateful to all the Staff at Valley Health Services Inc. for the love, care and compassion that they showed towards her each and everyday.
