Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Irene E. Skubitz, age 92, formerly of Union Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, September 6, 2014 at the Otsego Manor. She had the love and comfort of her daughters at her bedside at the time of her passing. She was born on September 14, 1921 in Hartwick a daughter of the late George and Susan Nickenson Jacobs. A lifelong area resident she graduated from Hartwick High School. On September 21, 1940 she was united in marriage to the late Frank Skubitz. The shared a loving and devoted union of forty-nine years until his passing in March of 1989. Affectionately known as "Mrs. S the Lunch Lady" she worked in the Richfield Springs Central School cafeteria for over thirty years, retiring in 1988. Irene had a strong belief in God and attended the Hartwick Christian Church. She had many diverse interests. Cooking and entertaining for her many friends and family were memories to treasure. As an avid animal lover for many years she raised Boston terriers, cocker spaniels as well as beagles. She made afghans blankets for family and friends and enjoyed traveling. Taking bus trips to visit most of the states as well as her winter time in Florida were among her pleasures. Mrs. Skubitz will always be remembered as a kind and gentle woman who truly loved being with people and lending a helping hand. She will be truly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Davis and her husband Vern of West Winfield, Kathleen Skubitz of Herkimer, one granddaughter, Stephanie Davis Manni and her husband Michael of Soul Korea, and great-granddaughter Michaela Manni, step-grandson, Jason Quatrino of Utica, several nieces, nephews, cousins and two very dear friends, Kathy Foster of Florida and Donald Osborn of Richfield Springs. Besides her parents and husband Frank she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, James Quatrino, two brothers, Carl and Ronald Jacobs, three sisters, Shirley Miller, Marie Harrington, and Dorothy Lindberg. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hartwick Christian Church, main Street, Hartwick. The Reverend Lavern Saxer, pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery. The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home on Tuesday evening to receive relatives and friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donation to the Hartwick Christian Church, or the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care.
