Obituary

HERKIMER-Irene I. Smith age 80 of Highland Avenue, passed away peacefully on Friday morning March 2, 2012 in St. Lukes Nursing Home, New Hartford. She was born on November 20, 1931 in Oppenheim, daughter of the late Robert D. and Bertha Root Brewer. Irene was raised in Newport and educated in West Canada Valley High School. On June 18, 1948 she was united in marriage with Harold L. Phillips in Newport. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-two years until his passing on March 5, 1991. She later married Charles Smith on October 8, 1993. He also preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith had a strong faith in God and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. In her leisure time she loved to read, play golf and spend time with her cherished grandchildren. To all who knew her they will remember a kind, caring and gentle woman whose devotion to her family always came first. She was always there for them, weather in good times or bad, they could always count on her. She will be sorely missed. Surviving are her two daughters, Irene A. Phillips who lived with her mother, Mary J. White and her husband Richard of Clinton, three sons, Harold L. Phillips Jr. of Herkimer, Robert Phillips and his wife Susan of Mohawk, James Phillips and his wife Suzanne of Herkimer, a brother Daniel Brewer of Mohawk, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves her two dogs who she thought the world of, Toby and Diamond. Besides her parents and husbands Harold and Charles she was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Teddy and infant Douglas Brewer and three sisters, Jean Terwilliger, Doris Gross and Linda Brauer. The funeral service and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
