HERKIMER-Irene Smith of Douglas Avenue passed away on Thursday evening October 19, 2006 in Little Falls Hospital. She had the comfort of her loving husband at her side. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska and was the daughter of the late John and Mini Bowman Ford. Irene was raised in Omaha and was a graduate of Benson High School . On October 7, 1944 she was united in marriage with Elmer L. Smith in Colorado Springs, CO . Mrs. Smith has resided with her husband in Herkimer since 1944. For many years she had worked as a seamstress for Mungers Department and Johns Upholstery Shop in Herkimer retiring in 2001. Irene had a strong belief in God and was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Herkimer. In her leisure time she enjoyed sewing and dressmaking and had taught her skills at Home Bureau. To all who knew her they will remember her warm, low key personality and unforgettable smile. She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are her husband of sixty-two years Elmer, a son, David and his wife Carole Smith of McKees Rock, PA, two grandchildren, Holly and Erin Smith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Charlotte Bailey who died in Omaha, NE this past week. It was Mrs. Smiths request that funeral and interment services be private and at the convenience of the family.
