Obituary

ILION-Iris Humphrey age 76 of Second Street, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Friday afternoon April 25, 2003 in St Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on March 15, 1927 in Woonsocket, RI, daughter of the late Ruben and Elsie Hagopian Vartabedian. She was a graduate of Hartford High School in Hartford, CT. A talented musician she was a pianist and jazz singer. She went under the professional name of Iris Bishop. Her musical talents brought her from New York City to this area where she met her husband to be John Richard Humphrey. On January 15, 1954 they were married in the Herkimer Methodist Church Parsonage. The Reverend Fred Cotnam officiated. She and her husband John have resided in Ilion since 1954 coming from Mohawk. For many years Mrs. Humphrey was a bookkeeper for Woods Tire Service and Ilion Carpet, retiring in 1983. She had a genuine interest in Indian folklore and a true appreciation of Native Americans. She and her husband made many journeys out west and gloried in the beauty of the landscape and its people. At one time Mrs. Humphrey owned The Navajo a store that sold Native American arts and crafts located in both Herkimer and Ilion. She had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First United Church Herkimer-Little Falls. At one time she belonged to the Ilion Amaranth. Iris will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person and will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. Surviving beside her husband of forty-nine years John are three children: Bradford R. Humphrey of Stephentown, twins Alan John Humphrey and Pamela Iris Humphrey both of Ilion, Two sisters; Arline Bagdigian and her husband Edward of Bloomfield, CT, Ann Talanian of Belmont, MA, twin grandchildren Audrey and Alyssa Humphrey several nieces and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday morning from 10:00 am until the time of the memorial service. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Brian Gaffney, Dr. Leo Sullivan, Mary Rose Rubin, Sue Zcebek, Ildi Ko, Donna Tabor and a very special friend Catherine Yule Wintle. Along with Iris you will be in our hearts forever.
