Obituary

HERKIMER-Irol Charles Bowie Ike age 101 of Exchange Avenue, passed away on Wednesday night January 3, 2007 in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. He was born on April 10, 1905 in Lisbon Falls, ME, son of the late Charles and Alice Canham Bowie. Ike was raised in Lisbon and graduated from Lisbon High School with the class of 1924. Upon graduation he joined the US Army Reserve and served at Fort Devons, MA. On September 1 1929 he was united in marriage with the former Etta M. Horsman in Clinton, MA. A loving and devoted union of over sixty-two years, until her passing on March 27, 1992. Mr. Bowie was in retailing for forty-one years. In 1927 he first joined the J.C. Penny Company in Marlboro, MA where he was Assistant Store Manager. He went on to serve as manager of the Penny Stores in Clinton, MA, Calais, ME and Waterville, ME for eighteen years. In 1943 he joined and managed the Montgomery Ward Stores in Herkimer, Claremont, NH, Glens Falls and then returning to Herkimer where he managed the Montgomery Ward Store on Albany Street and opened the New Wards Store on North Main Street. He retired in 1967. Upon his retirement from Montgomery Wards he joined the Herkimer Evening Telegram as an Advertising Executive and served for three years as Advertising Manager. He continued to work for the Evening Telegram Advertising Department on a part time basis until July of 2004, completing eighty years of continuous uninterrupted employment. Irol had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. He was active with the church Mens Club where he was President for two terms; he served on the Board of Trustees for two terms as well as serving as Board Treasurer for two terms. He was a member of Waterville Lodge #33 Free and Accepted Masons in Waterville, ME and a member of the Royal Arch Masons Chapter # 52 Waterville, ME. Mr. Bowie was a member for over twenty years of the Herkimer Businessmens Association where he served three terms as President and two terms as chairman of the Herkimer C.A.C. He was also a charter member and part organizer of the Herkimer Kiwanis Club where he was first vice president and member for over thirty years. Ike was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing golf well into his 90s. The end of a long life has come to our friend, as it comes eventually to all human beings. Yet nothing can detract from the joy that we shared in knowing him. We rejoice that Irol Bowie was a part of our lives. Surviving are his daughter Dorothy Olsen and her husband of Longmont, CO, one son Everett and his wife Shirley of Chestertown, nine grandchildren Mark Bowie and his wife Rushell of Pittsfield, MA, Ellie Bowie of Glens Falls, Leslie Bowman and her husband David of Queensbury, Karen Manning and her husband Keith of Lake George, Pamela Funnye and her husband David of Glens Falls, Kristin Belline and her husband Joseph of Stuyvesant, Michael Bowie of Lake George, Karen Hartmann of Denver, CO and Robert Lucas of Longmont, CO, nine great-grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Amanda Bowman, Neil Manning, Devon and Alex Funnye, Samantha and Ethan Belline and Brittany Hartmann. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer County Meals on Wheels Program. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The members of Herkimer Lodge #423 F & AM are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:00 pm for ritualistic services.
