Jack Lee “Levi” Smith, 71, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 5, 2026, at the Foltsbrook Center for Nursing and Rehab in Herkimer—on the birthday of his beloved grandfather, Milo Smith. He left this world surrounded by the love and support of his family.
Born on September 16, 1954, Jack was the son of the late John C. Smith and Marlene R. Jackson. He grew up in Herkimer and graduated from West Canada School. Following in his grandfather Milo’s footsteps, Jack became a skilled craftsman, shaping wood into unique creations reminiscent of pieces found in the Adirondack Museum or the historic Great Camps of the Adirondacks. His work was rustic, distinctive, and deeply expressive—no two pieces ever alike. Their charm lay in their simplicity and in the way each piece honored both traditional and modern sensibilities.
Beyond his craftsmanship, Jack found joy in singing with the St. Anthony’s Glee Club and serving as an altar server at Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer.
Jack is survived by his devoted siblings: Michael I. Smith and his wife Darlene of Little Falls; Kathaleen Ervin and her husband Richard of Herkimer/Florida; and Michele Mlinar of East Herkimer. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews—Koren, Eric, Tiffany, Kristen, Ira, Neil, and Olivia—as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. Jack cherished the friendships of David Jackson, Patty Call, Kathy Ashe, Alison Brown, Scott and Mary Grogan, all of whom meant the world to him.
Honoring Jack’s wishes, all services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. He will be laid to rest with his parents in Middleville Cemetery in the spring.
The family has entrusted his care to Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, NY.
