Obituary

HERKIMER-James W. English 71 of Steuben Road died on Thursday, November 9, 2000 in Saint Lukes Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford. He was born in Herkimer on June 29, 1929, son of the late Earl A. and Sarah Forsyth English. A lifelong Herkimer resident he graduated from Herkimer High School with the "class of 1948". An honorably discharged US Army veteran, he served our country during the Korean War. He was in the Amphibious Forces and took part in "Operation Blue Jay" which built Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. On February 10, 1951 Jim married Margaret Ray in theHerkimer Reformed Church. A union of forty-nine years that has blessed them with lovingchildren, grandchildren and great grandchildren. For thirty-three years he was a Herkimer FireFighter. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief in 1966 and in 1978 became FireChief. He served in that capacity for eight years until his retirement in 1986. Hisinvolvement with fire fighting went beyond his duties in the village of Herkimer. He was acertified New York State Fire Instructor, a co-founder of Herkimer County Arson TaskForce, where he was a lifetime member and had served as its chairman. He also served onthe Herkimer County Fire Advisory Board and was instrumental in the forming of the MohawkValley Volunteer Ambulance Corp. (MOVAC). After his retirement he drove the van for theHerkimer County Office of the Aging. He was a member the Herkimer Reformed Church and hadserved on the Consistory Board of the church. Surviving besides his beloved wife Margaret are twosons and their wives; Gary and Kathy Wilbert English of Ilion, Eric and Deborah GodlewskiEnglish of Mohawk, a daughter; Julie and her husband Michael Cring of Cooperstown, eightgrandchildren; Ryan and his wife Amy English, Kerry Harrold, Christopher English, Eric andJoshua English, Kaitlin, Nicole and Paige Cring, two great grandsons; Ethan and AndrewHarrold, a sister; Elizabeth Miller of Herkimer, one uncle Lynn English of East Herkimer,one niece, six nephews and several cousins. Funeral service will take place on Sunday at 2:00 PMin the Herkimer Reformed Church. The Reverends Donald and Christine Battjesco-pastors will officiate. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Townof Little Falls. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street,Herkimer to receive relatives and friends Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church Memorial Fund. Envelopeswill be available at the funeral home.
