HERKIMER-James Robert Haggerty Sr. age 68 of West German Street, passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening May 11, 2009in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center,Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on January 7, 1941 in Cooperstown, son of the late Walter J, and Edith Krebser Haggerty. A life long area resident he was raised and educated in Cooperstown and Richfield Springs Schools. On June 30, 1959 he entered the US Army where he had served in Germany. He was Honorably Discharged on June 29, 1965 attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He returned home and went to work as a machinist for the Bendix Corporation which later became Lucas Aero Space retiring in 1997 after twenty-eight years of dedicated service.
On July 25, 1987 he was united in marriage with the former Joan M. Greiner in Cedarville. They have made their home in Herkimer since that time.
Jim was proud of his time spent with military service and had memberships in both the Herkimer American Legion Post # 38, and the West Winfield American Legion Post # 2338. In his leisure time he enjoyed camping, fishing and sports. He was an avid fan of his favorite NFL team the Green Bay Packers. To those who knew him, will tell you that he was very competitive weather it was playing volleyball or just pitching horse shoes. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his cherished thirteen grandchildren and six great grand children and they will all tell you he was the Best grandfather in the world. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral service will be on Friday at 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Anthony Ligato, Pastor of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church Herkimer will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home on Friday two hours prior to the funeral service (12:00 noon until 2:00 pm). As an alternative to flowers expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
