HERKIMER-Jean Elizabeth Humphrey age 96, passed away on Wednesday afternoon December 3, 2014 in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on January 8, 1918 in Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica and was the first female baby born that year in Saint Elizabeth's. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Emma Autenrith Seavey. A lifelong area resident she was a graduate of Middleville High School. She furthered her education at Potsdam State Teachers College, majoring in music. On August 18, 1943 she was united in marriage with William D. Humphrey in Jacksonville, FL, just before he left to serve with the US Navy in World War II. After the war in 1946, they made their home in Herkimer. Mr. Humphrey passed away on September 1st of this year after seventy-one years of total devotion to each other. For twenty-five years, Mrs. Humphrey worked as a school teacher. She first taught in Kinderhook and for nineteen years in Herkimer Central School system teaching kindergarten, music and piano. She retired in 1979. Jean was a devoted member of Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. She also was a member of the Herkimer Garden Club, the New York State Teachers Association and the Potsdam Alumni. To all who knew her they will never forget a gracious, soft spoken and talented lady. She loved her family as they loved her and found great joy in all that they have accomplished. She will be truly missed. Surviving her are three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Daryl Mowers of Ilion, Linda and Ritchie Carpenter of Herkimer, Jean and David Marconi of Syracuse, one sister, Mildred Carney of Middleville, six grandchildren, Kristin Martin, Philip Martin, Emma Carpenter, Kyle and Kimmy Carpenter, Brian Mowers and Fiance Kristy Manley, Ashley (Mowers) Dandrea and husband Nicholas, a very special great-granddaughter, Camden Dandrea, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband William she was preceded in death by her son H. William Humphrey in 1982 and her brother, Joseph Seavey. Calling hours for Mrs. Humphrey will be on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 am in Saint Francis deSales Church; Herkimer the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham V.F., Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to St. Francis deSales Parish, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
