RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Jean VanderVeen, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday September 11, 2014, in the Otsego Manor. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on October 15, 1930, in West Sayville, Long Island, daughter of the late Marinus and Nellie VanEssendelft Slager. Jean was raised and educated in Sayville. She furthered her education, graduating from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. She was first married to Peter J. Andela who died in 1978. On October 31, 1981, she was united in marriage with Howard Bart VanderVeen. They shared a devoted union of twenty-one years until his passing on January 10, 2003. Mrs. VanderVeen had worked as a secretary at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, retiring in 1981. Jean had a strong faith in God and was a member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs. She also taught in the Title One Reading Program in Richfield Springs. She was a gifted artist who enjoyed painting with oils and later took up water colors. To all who knew her she was a caring and helpful person. She enjoyed doing for others while looking for nothing in return. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren who affectionately called her G.G. Surviving are a son, James P. Andela and his wife Cynthia of Richfield Springs, two daughters, June Baker and her husband Allen of Richfield Springs, Barbara Andela-Skar of Grand Rapids MI, a daughter-in-law, Christina DeFisher of Williamson, one brother, Nelson Slager of Sayville, eleven grandchildren, Luke Andela, Karla Andela, Lisa Miedema, Bradley, Jessica Hart, Samuel and Katelyn Baker, Casey, Rebecca, Sara, and Corey Skar, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husbands Peter and Howard she was preceded in death by her son Jeffery Andela, a grandson, Clayton Andela, a brother, James Slager and four sisters, Adriana Overton, Marion Battjes, Frances Schans, Florence DeVries. Calling hours for Mrs. VanderVeen will be on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, 187 Main Street; Richfield Springs. The Pastor Stan Slager, will officiate.
