Obituary

UTICA-Jeanette B. Martin of Acacia Village, formerly of Vickerman Hill, Mohawk, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday afternoon, September 20, 2003, in Faxton Hospital, Utica. A lifelong area resident she was born in Ilion, daughter of the late Augustine and Florence May Whitaker Breslin. Jeanette's life was music; she was a graduate of Crane School of Music, Potsdam. After graduation, she taught music in Evans Mills, Potsdam, Little Falls, and Frankfort. On July 2, 1938, she married Donald Law Martin in Oneida. Theirs was a loving and devoted union of 63 years until his passing on December 10, 2001. Mrs. Martin had taught music in the Herkimer Central Schools retiring in 1971. She along with her husband resided in Acacia Village since 1995. She was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church where she was a soloist, choir member, past choir director, member of the Esther Circle and past member of the church consistory. Both she and her husband were active with the Meals on Wheels program. She was a member of AARP and was its music director, the B-Sharp of Utica, Joel Bristol Association of Hamilton College, Benjamin F. Raymond Society of Potsdam College, the Herkimer County Historical Society, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association and the Glimmerglass Opera. Jeanette loved to garden, this was evidenced by the beautiful flower gardens at her home in Mohawk and later at Acacia Village. She was especially proud of the prize-winning roses that she grew and delighted in the many people that enjoyed them. Jeanette will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person and will be greatly missed by many, especially her family. Surviving are her daughter, Sonia Martin; granddaughter, Michelle Boyer; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Alyssa and Andrea Boyer, all of Syracuse; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Donald, a sister, Bernice Decker, preceded her in death. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the Tompkins Chapel, Masonic Home, Utica. The Reverend David Kirkpatrick, Chaplain, will officiate. Following the service, Mrs. Martin will be laid to rest next to her husband in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls. The family will be present in Tompkins Chapel to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the funeral service, 10:00 until 11:00 am. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church or Acacia Village. Envelopes will be available at the chapel. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., Herkimer.
