Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-John A. DeFino age 76 passed away peacefully on Saturday evening July 11, 2015 in his home. He was born on September 9, 1938 in New York City, son of the late Joseph and Vincenza Trotta DeFino. John was raised in New York and was educated in Boys private schools. He furthered his education at the New York School of Printing and went on to graduate from the International School of Printing in Colorado Springs, CO. On April 4, 1959 he was united in marriage with the former Evelyn Hertel in Whitestone, NY. Mr. DeFino was employed by the New York City Typographers union until 1970 when he became disabled. In December of 1974, he, with his family moved to Richfield Springs. Mr. DeFino was a faithful member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in Richfield Springs. John was a man with a strong sense of community. Most notably he served for twenty-one years as the Town of Richfield Justice. He was one of the founders of Pop Warner Football in Richfield Springs and was a coach for the Richfield Springs Little League. For twenty-one years he was a Football Official for the Mohawk Valley Chapter and for twenty years he was a Baseball Official for the Mohawk Valley Chapter. He served for twenty-six years on the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department and volunteered for the Richfield Springs Food Bank. Over the years he accompanied the Richfield Springs School Band to parades and trips as their First Aid Director. In his leisure time he enjoyed golf, traveling the world with his wife Evelyn on cruise ships and spending winters in San Diego. A devoted friend and family man he will be greatly missed by all. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-one years Evelyn, one daughter, Lisa Hareld and her husband Greg of San Diego, CA, a son, Josh DeFino and his wife Brenda of Syracuse, two granddaughters, Chandler and Carly of San Diego. Calling hours for Mr. DeFino will be on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral from the funeral home will be on Friday at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church, Richfield Springs with the Reverend Bernard Osei Ampong, pastor officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Calling Hours J.
