Herkimer- John Joseph Harney, 82, died Monday January 6, 2003 in Herkimer, NY with his daughter Patricia and his nephew Thomas at his side. Born in Poultney, VT in 1920, son of the late John J. and Johanna (Hannon) Harney, he was the youngest and last surviving of 11 children. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was employed as a motor vehicle operator for the State of New York, Marcy State Hospital, retiring in 1975. He was wholeheartedly Irish and Democrat. He was married for 58 years to Evelyn (Taylor) Harney who predeceased him in April 2002. They resided in Herkimer, NY and for many years in Ormond Beach, FL before returning to Herkimer to reside at Claxton Manor in 1999. He leaves to mourn in his absence and celebrate his liberation from ill health, his only child Patricia (Harney) Peta and her husband James of New Hartford, CT, his granddaughter, Jayme Peta of Boulder, CO, his beloved nephew Thomas Harney and wife Carol and family of Ilion, his niece Sharon Cassady of Clarks Mills, friends and neighbors in Herkimer and Ormond Beach, and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson James Peta who will be there with his grandmother to welcome his grandfather to his new home. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial service will be held on January 18th at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Folts Homes. Please respect his request for no flowers.
