HERKIMER-John H. Manion age 87 of 104 North Washington Street, formerly of 319 Henry Streetpassed away peacefully on Sunday evening May 2, 2010 in Folts Homes.
He was born on November 12, 1922 in Herkimer, son of the late Daniel E. and Aline Germaine Chelle Manion. Jack was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. He furthered his education at Syracuse University for two years. He then answered the call of his country by enlisting in the US Army, serving as a radio operator. He was a recipient of the European-Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged in 1946 attaining the rank of Technician Fourth Class. After his military service he returned to Syracuse University where he graduated with his degree in Forest Products Utilization.
On March 18, 1944 he was united in marriage with the former Gladys D. Lawrence in Junction City, KA. Following the war Jack was employed by the American Creosoting Company in Brunswick, GA. In 1957 the family relocated to Herkimer and Jack began his career with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. He retired in 1986 after 33 years as a Senior Forester specializing in land acquisition. Mr. and Mrs. Manion also resided in Richfield Springs and McConnellsville, NY. They then relocated to Herkimer to reside at the Folts Homes. On October 22, 2009 Mrs. Manion passed away after sixty-five years of marriage.
Mr. Manion had a strong belief in God; he was a member of Saint Francis deSales Church and the church choir. Jack will always be remembered for his sense of community and his passion for sharing his profound love and knowledge of nature. He was an avid sportsman enjoying fishing, hunting, canoeing and golfing. He was a member of the Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4915, Herkimer, a Boy Scout leader, and a member of the American Radio Relay League, Fort Herkimer American Radio Club and the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club being a recipient of the Sportsman of the Year award. For many years Jack was an instructor at the annual Conservation Day at Lake Deltaheld for elementary school children. Also Jack enjoyed arts, crafts and needlework having won several blue ribbons at the state fair for his crocheted items. To all who knew him they will never forget his warmth, wonderful sense of humor, and charming smile. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are two sons, John T. Manion of Birmingham, AL, Daniel Manion and his wife Hilary of Weaverville, NC, one daughter, Janet Kessler and her husband Gordon of McConnellsville, one sister, Jacqueline Brown of Herkimer, a sister-in-law, Mary Manion of Herkimer, eleven grandchildren,, seven great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Gladys he was preceded in death by a son Terry Manion, one daughter, Margaret M. Robinson, and a brother George Manion.
Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Saturday at 9:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer at 9:30 am with the Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
