SPRINGFIELD CENTER - John Ostrander, age 68, of State Highway No. 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2011, in Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.He was born on June 14, 1942, in Rome. John was raised in Waterville, and was educated in the Waterville Central Schools.For more than 20 years, Mr. Ostrander was the caretaker at the Town of Springfield Public Boat Landing. He also owned the small candy store at the site. Over the years, Mr. Ostrander was affectionately known as "Candyman" to all the children and adults that frequented the area. He retired in 2001.John had a great love for the outdoors and in his leisure time liked to go hunting. He also had a very unique hobby, Popsicle Sticks Craft. With the popsicle sticks he made a replica of his boat landing and later built a replica of his family farm with popsicle sticks. One year they were displayed at the annual Springfield Center Fourth of July Celebration.Most importantly he was a stay at home grandfather and dad watching, caring and tending to the everyday needs of his grandchildren and his life partner, Gloria Westerman's children. John will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person and will be greatly missed.He is survived by his life partner, Gloria; six sons, John Ostrander and his wife, Sally, Wade Ostrander, Jason Ostrander, Luke Ostrander, Eric Westerman and Darren Marriott; two daughters, Lisa Young and her husband, George, and Jessica Pelzer and her husband, Scott; a daughter-in-law, Devin Westerman; brothers, Edward and Charles Ostrander; sisters, June Hull of Paris Hill, Mary and Arvilla; and 10 grandchildren.Services for Mr. Ostrander will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service, 6 until 7 p.m.
