MOHAWK-John F. Roberts Jack age 76 of Mason Road passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning May 29, 2007 in his home.
He was born on March 3, 1931 in the Town of Schuyler, son of the late Lloyd and G. Marie Laribee Roberts. A lifelong area resident he was educated in Schuyler and Utica Proctor High School. An honorably discharged US Navy veteran he served during the Korean War. Upon completion of his military service he went to work for a short time with the Remington Arms Company, Ilion. He then went to work for Burrell Saw & Tool Company in Mohawk, retiring after thirty-five years of dedicated service. In 1986 he started the Mohawk Small Engine Repair Shop on Route 5-S in German Flatts. He successfully owned and operated that business until his retirement in 1996.
On January 26, 1974 he married the former Marlene Whipple in the Mohawk Reformed Church. They have made their home in Mohawk since.
To all who knew Jack they will remember a strong willed man who enjoyed the outdoors. He was a member of the Mohawk Fish and Game Club and the Mohawk Snowmobile Club. He was a community minded individual and had belonged to the Mohawk Junior Chamber of Commerce. Jack was unique man; he had a down to earth manner that flowed from his character. He was gifted mechanically and used his talent to the benefit of many people both in his business and personal life. Any conversation with him was frank and to the point. But you could always sense a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be greatly missed by many especially his loving family.
Surviving are his wife of thirty-three years Marlene, three sons, John Roberts Jr. and his wife LAnnette of Herkimer, Richard Roberts and his wife Bernedette of Nashua, NH, Thomas Guzik of Denver, CO, five daughters Heidi Benson and her husband James of Ilion, Cindy McCaw and her husband Randy of Ilion, Joy Roberts of Herkimer, Kathleen Harris of Saratoga Springs, Julie McDowell and her husband Robert of Ilion, one Brother, James and his wife Ruth Roberts of Montana, two sisters and their husbands, Vivian and George Withers of Frankfort, Diane and Claude Strife of Owego, eighteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in Mohawk Cemetery II (Vickerman Hill). The Reverend Mark Anderson, Pastor of the Herkimer Reformed Church will officiate. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Heart Association or MOVAC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral service. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
