Obituary

EAST HERKIMER-Joseph Giachetti age 80 of Pine Grove Road passed away unexpectedly on Saturday August 11, 2001 at his home. He was born on March 21, 1921 in Little Falls, son of the late Vincent and Mary Donadio Giachetti. A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Little Falls. He proudly answered the call of his country in World War II and was honorably discharged from the US Army Air Force after serving in China, Burma and India. He was a mason by trade and for over fifty years a member of Local Union # 2 International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers. For thirty years working with the Roger McKay Construction Company, New York City and later with the Gaetano Construction Company doing work at both Griffiss and Plattsburgh Air Force Bases, retiring in 1983. He was of the Methodist faith. Joe had a love for the outdoors and was a life member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. His special interest was raising racing Pigeons and was a member of the Mid-State Sportsman Racing Pigeon Club. He was a member of the East Herkimer Memorial VFW Post # 6531, and the China, Burma, India Veterans Association. Surviving him are his companion and partner of twenty-eight years Barbara LaRowe, two sons; William and his wife Wendy Giachetti of Mohawk, Vincent Giachetti of Sanford, FL, one daughter; Mary and her husband Robert Slack of Herkimer, his extended family Gary LaRowe of Gloversville, Linda and her husband Clifford Munio of Herkimer, four sisters; Catherine Millette of Pittsfield, MA, Carmella Paul, Rose Giachetti and Josephine Taylor all of Herkimer, eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Robert J. Giachetti in 1989, three brothers; Amadeo "Armen", Angelo and Henry Giachetti, two sisters Irene Vogt and Louise Gregg. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street Herkimer. The Reverend William Otis pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to MOVAC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of the East Herkimer Memorial VFW Post # 6531 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM for services.
