Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Joseph W. Kosina passed away on Friday, February 07, 2014 in Little Falls Hospital (Rehabilitation Center), following a long, stoic battle with bladder cancer. Joe was born March 29, 1933 in Queens and a graduate of high school in June of 1951. On June 2, 1957 he married Teresa A. Valenta and together they lived and raised three sons in Brentwood, NY. Joe was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Teresa, of 56 years; their three sons, William (Jean), James (Marie), and Robert, granddaughter; Amy (Saxxon) and last but not least, his brother John J. Kosina. His warm smile and love will be truly missed. Joe possessed a strong sense of what was the correct way to do things. One of his favorite lines, of which he had many, was always use the proper tool for the proper job. Joe worked as a technician for RCA and Sperry Rand, until his retirement. He worked hard to support his family and had the longtime goal of retiring at 55, moving upstate, and raising beef animals. And in 1988 that is what he did. He had a log home built in Unadilla Forks and started to learn the art of taking care of Herefords. It was at this location that his granddaughter learned that she shared a love of animals as much as her Pa did. They spent many happy times on a tractor or feeding the cattle. The whole family helped Joe with this endeavor, especially when part of his barb wire or electric fence would break and cows would be found in neighboring lands or way down the road a piece. It was work, but Joe truly enjoyed his hobby. Joes other leisure time activity, besides deer hunting, was fishing. He not only liked to fish, he turned it into another job. This was also a 7 days a week job. He started out with 4 Seasons Sports near his home in (U.F) but took his business with him to Richfield Springs in 2003. He turned one of his garage stalls into the shop, as he called it, and never had to go far to tend to his store. His love of this sport would transcend into his discussions with his customers as they sought out fishing information. Besides selling supplies and giving detailed information, Joe was out on Canadarago Lake as often as he could. He belonged to the Susquehanna Bass Association and participated in bass tournaments. He also was a weekend ice fishing warrior with his sons. Joe accomplished what he set out to do, retire, live, and enjoy. Calling hours for Mr. Kosina will be on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral service will follow immediately after the calling hours at 7:00 pm with Pastor Rick Kinney officiating. Interment will take place later this spring in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.
