HERKIMER - Joseph Kowalczik, age 93, a long time Herkimer residentpassedaway on, November 25, 2017 in New Jersey.
He was born on July 26, 1924 a son of the late Konstantin and Zenowia Kowalczik. Joe was raised and educated in Herkimer graduating from Herkimer High School with the Class of 1943. After high school he joined the Navy in his efforts to help fight in World War II. When Joe returned home from the war, as a proud veteran, he attended Hartwick College. He was a plumber by trade; he worked in the power house and later became the Foreman of the Craft Shop for Remington Arms in Ilion.
On August 17, 1946 he was united in marriage with the former Jean Hart in the Herkimer United Methodist Church with the Reverend Fred Cotnam officiating a blessed union of 66 years until her passing on October 24, 2012.
Joseph enjoyed playing basketball and played semi-professional basketball. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening, known for his hot peppers. He was a member of Olive Branch Lodge #40 F&AM in Ilion. He was also a member of the former Herkimer Lodge #423 F&AM where he served as Master of the Lodge in 1984 and 1991. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Herkimer. Joseph also founded the Depressions Boys Club.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Barbara Misar and husband Steven, his son, David Alan Kowalczik and companion Debbie Gross, his grandchildren, Kevin Misar and wife Kelly, Brian Misar and wife Catherine, and Darren Misar and wife Meghan, and his great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Connor, Caroline and Fiona, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his wife Jean he was preceded in death by four brothers Peter, Michael, John and William Kowalczik and one sister, Mary Pasachnik.
A burial service with Masonic Ritual and Military Honors will take Place on Saturday May 5th at 9:30am in The Church Street Cemetery, Little Falls and a memorial service on Saturday May 5th at 11:00 am in the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer.
