VAN HORNESVILLE - Josephine Edmonds Case, a retired editor and former president of the Van Hornesville Community Corporation, died suddenly on Thursday, May 27 at her home in Van Hornesville. She was 77.
Born in New York City, the daughter of the late Everett N. Case and Josephine Young Case, she was married to E. Robert Mason Jr. Together with her husband she edited Herkimer at 200, the history of Herkimer County published by the Herkimer County Historical Society in 1992. More recently, she had done editorial work on New York History, a quarterly journal published by the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Ms. Case had a deep background in editorial work, beginning with the Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1955, and extending for 25 years in New York City at, among others, The Foundation Center and the New York Public Library.
She was educated in the public schools of Hamilton, N. Y., won a bachelor of arts degree at Bryn Mawr Collegeand a master of arts in history at St. Hildas College of Oxford University. She was a loyal and active alumna of Bryn Mawr and served as her class secretary for several years; she was also a member of the Oxford University Alumnae Association of the U. S. Her other memberships included the Van Hornesville Community Corporation and the Herkimer County Historical Society.
Long a resident of New York City, she and her husband retired to Van Hornesville in 1981 and had lived there ever since. Ms. Case was a music lover and sang with The Van Hornesville Voices, a community chorus.
Beside her husband, Ms. Case leaves three brothers, James of Spring, TX, Samuel of Fairfax, CA, and John of Cambridge, MA; four step-children, Catherine Mason of Springfield Center, NY, Stephen Mason of Branchville, NJ, Martha Robertson of Phoenix, AZand Paul Mason of Oxford, NJ, as well as numerous step-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 26th at 4:00 p.m. in the Millpond Community Center, Van Hornesville.
Ms. Case loved cats, history and her college, so donations in her memory can be made appropriately to Bryn Mawr College, the Herkimer County Humane Society or the Herkimer County Historical Society.
