EAST HERKIMER-Katharine L. Baker age 86 of Shells Bush Road entered into eternal rest on Friday evening October 8, 2004 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born on September 28, 1918 in Haverhill, NH daughter of the late Edward J. and Eva Keyes Lockwood. A life long area resident she was raised in Little Falls and educated there. On June 27, 1938 she married Bernard W. Baker in St Johnsville. A devoted union of fifty years Mr. Baker preceded her in death on October 25, 1988. Besides caring for her husband and children she found the time to work outside the home. She had worked for Duofold and the Allegro Shoe Company before going to work for the Herkimer Area Resource Center where she taught sewing at the Herkimer Industries. She retired in 1983 after twelve years of service.
Mrs. Baker had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Herkimer. She was a member of Myrtle Chapter Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as Matron in 1966. She at one time was a member of the Amaranth.
To all that knew Katharine they will remember her warm smile. She was a friend to many and a joy to be with. Her happiness came with being with her family, especially her six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Surviving are one son, Bernard W. Baker Jr. and his wife Nancy of east Herkimer, a daughter, Patricia Butler and her husband Richard of East Herkimer, one brother, William Lockwood of Richfield Springs, two sisters, Leta Zaengle and the Reverend Rita Tanner both of California, a sister-in-law, Francis Lockwood, six grandchildren, Carolyn Rockwell of MA, Jeffrey Butler of Richfield Springs, Mark Butler, Nadine Krouse, Patrick Baker and Michelle Bass all of Herkimer, eleven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Bernard, she was predeceased by three brothers, Edward, James L. and Frank Lockwood, two sisters, Nathleen Herkel and Elizabeth Denny.
Funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church, Herkimer. The Reverend David Kirkpatrick will officiate. After the funeral service Mrs. Baker will be laid to rest with her husband in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the church. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
