Obituary

ILION-Katherine Marie Johnston, age 88, formerly of 80 East North Street, passed away on Friday morning January 25, 2013 in Folts Homes, Herkimer. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on October 8, 1924, in the town of Richfield, daughter of the late Frank and Lula Hunt Schuyler. Katherine was raised and educated in Utica. On May 2, 1942, she was united in marriage with Carl Johnston in Utica. They shared a loving union of fifty-one years until his passing on June 19, 1981. For fifteen years Mrs. Johnston worked as a nurses aide at the Masonic Care Community in Utica, and Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion and for two years in the cleaning department at the House of the Good Shepard in Utica. She retired in 1980. Mrs. Johnston had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Ilion United Methodist Church. She was proud of her American heritage and being a descendant of General Phillip Schuyler. To all those who knew her they will remember a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family and will be greatly missed. Surviving are her nine sons, Carl Johnston II and his wife Ruth of Dolgeville, Todd S. Johnston and wife Karen of Frankfort, Leonard C. Johnston and his wife Cindy of Newport, Timothy Johnston and wife Sharon of Ilion, Wayne D. Johnston and wife Cathy of Ilion, Roger P. Johnston and wife Lenora of Newport, Earl A. Johnston of Herkimer, Dale E. Johnston and wife Ann of Forrestport, Danny Johnston and wife Tammy of Dolgeville, three daughters, Jean Shibley and husband David of Altus, OK, Susan Smith and husband Willie of Jordanville, Laura Horning and husband Daniel of Frankfort, a daughter-in-law Robin Johnston of Lock, seventy grandchildren, many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and special niece Nancy Mason. Besides her parents and husband Carl she was preceded in death a son, Carlos Johnston, two daughters, Pomray Pett and Alice Johnston, three grandchildren, Brian, Keith and Eric Johnston, four brothers, one sister and a sister-in-law, Leona Schuyler. Calling hours for Mrs. Johnston will be on Monday (today) from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc. 115 Court Street Herkimer. Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the funeral home. The Reverend Cathy Lee, Folts Homes Chaplain will officiate. Interment will take place later this spring in Rural Park Cemetery, Ingham Mills.
