HERKIMER-Laverne Edith Helmer age 88 formerly of Devendorf Street, Mohawk passed away on Friday morning October 10, 2014 in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica. She was born on November 3, 1925 in Kast Bridge, daughter of the late Norton C. and Marjory Christman Helmer. A lifelong area resident she was educated in West Canada Valley Schools. She had lived in Ilion and more recently in Mohawk. Laverne had a strong belief in God and was a faithful member of the Herkimer Reformed Church. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing the piano much to the delight of her friends and family. She was also an avid card player. To all who knew Laverne, she was happiest when she was surrounded by her loving family. She will be truly missed. Surviving are her sister Irene Euron of East Herkimer, five brothers and their wives, Alton and Madeline Helmer of Fredonia, Frank and Mary Lee Helmer of Herkimer, Stuart and Deborah Helmer of Tarboro, NC, Leon and Linda Helmer of Norway, Bert and Mary Ellen Helmer of Herkimer, a brother-in-law, Walter Richards of East Herkimer, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Small and Marion Richards and a brother Eugene Helmer. Calling hours for Ms. Helmer will be on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will take place in the Herkimer Reformed Church, on Tuesday at 11:00 am with the Reverend Brian Engel officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Folts Homes or the Herkimer Area Resource Center.
