Obituary

HERKIMER - Lawrence J. Ortello, 77, of South Washington Street, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in his home. He was born March 20, 1925, in Utica, son of the late Vincent J. and Genevieve Samsell Amell. Larry was raised and educated in West Winfield. An honorably discharged World War II veteran, he proudly served with the United States Marine Corps in the Asiatic Pacific area. For 10 years he worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, retiring in 1980. Mr. Ortello has lived in Herkimer since 1987, coming from Stratford, Conn. He was a communicant of the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer, a life member of Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4915, Herkimer, a member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, Mohawk, the Marine Corps League, Ilion, and AARP. He had a strong love for the outdoors, where he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Larry will always be remembered as having an outgoing personality with a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family. Surviving him are two daughters, Darlene Wedderspoon of Gansevoort and Sylvia Jean and her husband William Addington of Harker Heights, Texas; three brothers, Norman Amell of Mauston, Wis., Clifford Amell of Herkimer and Robert Amell of Washington; two sisters, Eleanor James of Herkimer and Barbara Baldwin of Warren, Ohio; four grandchildren, among them are William Addington II of Killeen, Texas, Christina Newman and her husband Bryan of Brownwood, Texas; one great-grandson, Brandon Newman; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, will be Monday at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Robert Shinos, pastor, will officiate. Mr. Ortello will be laid to rest with military honors in Crown Hill Memorial Park, town of Kirkland, later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 4 until 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post 4915. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of VFW Post 4915 are asked to meet in the funeral home on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. for ritualistic services.
