Obituary

STARKVILLE-Leah Eileen Cook age 90 passed away peacefully on Friday February 24, 2017 in Focus Rehabilitation and Nursing at Otsego, Cooperstown. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. Leah was born on November 16, 1926 in Hallsville, daughter of the late Floyd A. and Florence Green Smith. She was raised in Hallsville and was a graduate of Fort Plain High School. On June 28, 1947 she was united in marriage to Lester John Cook in Hallsville. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-five years until his passing on July 27, 1992. Mrs. Cook had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Saint James Lutheran Church in Starkville. For a number of years she served as the Town of Stark Tax Collector and for fifty years worked locally as an Avon Sales Lady, retiring in 2004. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilt making and was a skilled seamstress. To her family her primary job was a devoted wife, caring mother and cherished grandmother and great grandmother. To all who knew her they will never forget her warm personality and gentle manner. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Schanz and her husband Horst of Richfield Springs, two sons, Stanley Alan Cook of Frankfort, James Lester and his wife Marie Cook of Johnstown, five grandchildren, Michael James Cook and his wife Lori of Frankfort, Michelle Sullivan and her husband Edward of Accokeek, MD, Stephanie DeVries and her husband Daniel of Vernon, Kristina Schanz of Rochester, Liesl Schanz of Syracuse, eight great grandchildren, Michael Cook, Ryan Cook and Brandon Cook, Gabrielle Sullivan, Bryce Sullivan and Garrett Sullivan, Lucy Margaret and Nora Jane DeVries, many nieces and nephews. Beside her husband Lester she was preceded in death by a brother David John Smith and a sister, Jennie Mae Hewitt, daughter-in-law Cheryl Cook, step sisters, Marion Ostrander and Elizabeth Gushue. Funeral service for Mrs. Cook will take place next Saturday March 4th in the Richfield Springs Bible Church at 2:00 pm with the Reverend David Tosi, pastor officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 1:00 pm until the time of the funeral service. Interment in Freys Bush Cemetery will be later this spring. Expressions of Sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Van Hornesville Volunteer Fire Department or your local food pantry. Funeral arrangements are with J.
