RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Leland Harold Smith age 76 of State Highway # 20 passed away on Tuesday December 11, 2001 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born on December 24, 1924 in VanHornesville, son of the late Harold and Evelyn Filkins Smith. A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of VanHornesville High School "class of 1942".
On December 20, 1944 he married Gladys Evelyn Tooley in the Richfield Springs Methodist parsonage. Until 1967 Mr. Smith owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1967 he went to work for the Remington Arms Company retiring in 1986.
Leland was happiest when he was surrounded by his loving family. He was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-six years Gladys, three sons and their wives; Leland R. and Rita Smith of Mohawk, Mark J. and Deborah Smith of Titusville, FL, Victor D. and Terri Smith of Cooperstown, five daughters; Linda L. Ramas of Pittsburgh, TX, Patricia A. and her husband Joseph Hectus of Ilion, Wendy S. and her husband John Willsey of Springfield, Carol J. and her husband Steven Hectus of Jordanville, Sandra M. Bridger and her companion Michael Swatling of Hartwick, one sister; Maria Fischer of Lexington, KY, twenty-seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother Ronald Smith.
Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:00 AM in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Douglas Burliegh will officiate. Interment will take place in Springfield Center Cemetery next spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
