HERKIMER - Leo W. Rivers, 88, of Willis Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Thursday morning, Feb. 3, 2005, in Valley Health Services Inc.
He was born Feb. 20, 1916, in Herkimer, son of the late George H. and Reba Harter Rivers. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. An honorably discharged veteran of World War II, he served with the Army Air Force. On Nov. 17, 1941, he was united in marriage with Veronica Zack in St. John's Church in Newport. For 55 years, Leo owned and operated Rivers Service Station at the corner of German Street and Route 28, retiring in 1989.He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, and a life member of American Legion Post 1118 in Cold Brook. Through his personal and business life, Leo was a good friend to many and will never be forgotten.Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Veronica; one son, Joseph and his wife Joyce Rivers; four grandchildren, Daniel and Chad Rivers, both of Herkimer, Melissa Burris of Ilion, Angel Pousada of Frankfort, 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl "Mike" Rivers of Herkimer; two sisters, Grace and her husband Raymond Jones of West Winfield and Eileen O'Bryan of Herkimer, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents, Leo was preceded in death by his brother, Donald and three sisters, Ruth French, Pauline Braren and Elsie Heyer.Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. Mark Cunningham will officiate.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday evening (today) from 6-8 p.m.Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
