RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Leon Michael Sarafin age 77 passed away on Monday morning November 15, 2010 in Bassett Medical Center. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on March 11, 1933 in the town of Columbia, son of the late Martin Sarafin Sr. and Mary Hugick Sarafin. A lifelong area resident he was raised in Columbia and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, class of 1952.
Leon was first married to Janice Jouben Sarafin who preceded him in death in April of 1970. On July 31, 1971 he was united in marriage with the former Caroline Kroll in Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs.
For more than fifty years Mr. Sarafin owned and operated the Sarafin Dairy Farm in the town of Columbia, retiring in 1999. For several years before his retirement, he worked full time as an Artificial Breeder as well. Leon and his wife moved to Richfield Springs in 1999 He then worked in the winter as a wingman for the town of Richfield.
Leon had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Church, Richfield Springs. He was also a forty-four year member of the Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E.
Mr. Sarafin will always be remembered as a sincere man who found great joy when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his cherished granddaughters. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his devoted wife of thirty-nine years Caroline, two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Fred Ingo of Barneveld, Teresa and Tyrone Andrecheck of Cromwell, CT, two sons and their wives, Michael and Angela Sarafin of Washington, DC, James and Laura Sarafin of League City, TX, four brothers, Charles Sarafin of DeLand, FL, Joseph Sarafin of Jordanville, John Sarafin and his wife Clara of Herkimer, Paul Sarafin and his wife Linda of Jordanville, five sisters, Marion Staruck and her husband Steve of Jordanville, Martha Stark of East Herkimer Catherine Krysczak of Utica, Genevieve and her husband Robert Buddle of Richfield Springs, Ann Szeflinski and her husband Paul of Richfield Springs, his two granddaughters Tamara and Tasha Andrecheck of Cromwell, CT, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents and first wife Janice he was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Martin Sarafin.
Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs on Friday at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in Saint Joseph the Worker Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Terence Healy, Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Josephs Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm.
Members of Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B. P. O. E. are asked to meet at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm for ritualistic services. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
