SPRINGFIELD - Leona J. McShane, 86, of Perine Street, Elmira, formerly of the town of Springfield, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012, in Saint Joseph's Hospital, Elmira. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.She was born on April 28, 1925, in West Winfield, daughter of late Frank and Candice Steele Reis. Leona was raised in West Winfield and was a graduate of West Winfield High School.On Jan. 15, 1966, she was united in marriage with John J. McShane in Richfield Springs. They made their home in Springfield Center until 1997, when they moved to Elmira to be near their daughter and her family.For 26 years Mrs. McShane worked for the A & P Store in Richfield Springs. She held the position of head cashier and retired in 1975.Leona had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. In her leisure time she enjoyed bowling and bowled in many of the local bowling leagues.To all who knew her they will never forget a loving, caring and hopeful person. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.Surviving are her devoted husband of 46 years, John; a daughter, Catherine DeWater of Elmira; three grandchildren, Michael DeWater and his wife, Cherie of Levonia, Carrie Tournour of Horseheads, and Steven DeWater of Elmira; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Kaitlyn DeWater, Riley and Lauren Tournour; several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gifford DeWater; two brothers, Richard and Harold; three sisters, Ellen, Florence and Mary Elizabeth.Calling hours for Mrs. McShane will take place from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Deborah Waldron, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting officiating. Interment will be in Springfield Center Cemetery.
