Obituary

EAST HERKIMER - Leonard James Hagen age 87 passed away on Wednesday evening July 16, 2008 in St. Lukes Medical Center, New Hartford with his loving family by his side. Leonard was born on March 31, 1921 in Ilion, son of the late Peter L. and Edith Butterworth Hagen. A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of Ilion High School, he furthered his education at Mohawk ValleyCommunity College and Utica College. On April 17, 1943 he was united in marriage with the former Betty Harter in the Herkimer Reformed Church. They shared a devoted union of forty-seven years until her passing on May 16, 1980. From 1940 until 1982, Mr. Hagen enjoyed working as a gun designer in the Research and Development Department of the Remington Arms Company, Ilion. An honorably discharged US Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Alfred A. Cunningham during World War II and was proud to be a lifetime member of the USS Cunningham. He was member of the Ilion Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon for many years and was a member of Ilion-Olive Branch Lodge # 40 Free and Accepted Masons where he recently received his sixty year membership pin. In his leisure time he found great enjoyment in bowling and playing cards with his many friends. Mr. Hagen is survived by his daughter, Joan, three grandchildren Jeff Rhymestine and his wife Michelle, Jami Lyga and her husband Jeff and Megan Rhymestine, five great grandchildren, Alexis, Jeffrey and Nicholas Lyga and Tyler and Jenna Rhymestine as well as three nieces. Besides his parents and wife Betty, he was preceded in death by his son James Hagen in 1964. Funeral service will be on Monday July 21st at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Interment with military honors provided by the US Navy will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Members of Ilion-Olive Branch Lodge # 40 F & AM are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday at 6:45 pm for ritualistic services.
