HERKIMER - Leta Perkins, age 76, of Burt Road, Little Falls, formerly of Nathan Galinski Apartments, Protection Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, April 25, 2003, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, Utica.
She was born on June 9, 1926 in Manheim, daughter of the late Charles and Ethel Fletcher Lamphere. Leta was raised in Dolgeville and was a graduate of Dolgeville High School. On May 15, 1943 she married Wayne Perkins in Dolgeville. He preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1986. Mrs. Perkins came to Herkimer in 1968 from Dolgeville. She led a very active working life. She was employed by the Daniel Green Company in Dolgeville, Templeton Glove Company and the Prospect Hotel in Herkimer. She was also an entrepreneur and for 13 years owned and operated Leta's Restaurant on Route 5 in East Herkimer and for four years she operated the Christian Book Store on Prospect Street in Herkimer. She also worked as a Home Health Aide, retiring at the age of 70, in August of 1997.Mrs. Perkins had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Oak Free Methodist Church, Herkimer. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her friends and family, especially her 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed.Surviving are two sons and their wives, Wayne and Judy Perkins of Dolgeville and Larry and Judy Perkins of Maumee, Ohio; two daughters and their husbands, Darlene and Larry Chergosky of Binghamton and Patricia and Joseph Fariel of Little Falls; a sister, Louise Dineen of Dolgeville; 11 grandchildren, Michelle and her husband Robert Niederriter, Wayne and his wife Gretchen Perkins, Todd and his wife Rebecca Perkins, Joseph and his wife Kim Perkins, Ryan and his wife Jennifer Perkins, John and his wife Melanie Perkins, Jason and his wife Elizabeth Perkins, Jamie and his wife Teresa Perkins and Krista, Kimberlee and Keri Fariel; nine great-grandchildren, Zakary Jones, Lucas Niederriter and Austin, Andrew, Tyler, Samuel, Joseph, Julia and Anna Perkins; and several nieces and nephews.Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased in death by her grandson Greg Chergosky, a brother Charles Lamphere and a sister Charlotte Youker.Funeral services will be on Monday at 10 a.m. in the Oak Ridge Free Methodist Church, West German Street, Herkimer. The Rev. Robert Wells, pastor, will officiate. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 4-8 p.m.Memorial donations may be made to the Mohawk Valley Christian Academy.
