RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Lincoln Leo Rapenske age 92 passed away on Thursday morning January 19, 2017 at Focus Rehabilitation and Nursing Home, Cooperstown. He was born on February 12, 1924 in Richfield Springs, son of the late John and Mary Putrikus Rapenske. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident; he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. After he graduated from high school he went to work for Risley Egg Company in Richfield Springs for a short time before enlisting in the US Army and was later approved to serve with the US Army Air Corps. Lincoln was a proud veteran of World War II from January 23, 1943, serving as a Bombardier-Gunner on a B-24 patrolling along the Pacific Coast to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Hawaii and back along the coast to Walla Walla, Washington. He was honorably discharged with a disability on September 29, 1944 attaining the rank of Flight Officer. After his discharge from the Army Air Corps he returned to Richfield Springs and to his job at the egg factory. He next went to work as a clerk at the US Postal Service in Richfield Springs. He was employed there for eight years before retiring due to vision problems he received in during his military service. On August 22, 1948 he was united in marriage to the former Emma Brown in Richfield Springs. They shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-seven years until her passing on October 27, 2015. Mr. Rapenske had a strong belief in God and was a devoted member of St. Joseph the Worker RC Church, Richfield Springs. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 616 Richfield Springs. Both Lincoln and his wife had a real affection for dogs especially, their two Springer Spaniels. Lincoln will always be remembered for his warm friendly manner. He had an amazing, great memory and never forgot anyone he met or their name. He will be sadly missed.
Surviving him are his brother Harry Rapenske and his wife Margaret of Liberty, a sister-in-law Blanche Rapenske of Waldwick, NJ, several nieces, nephews and his Cocker Spaniels, Penske and Willie B.
Besides his parents and wife Emma he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Rapenske and James Rapenske.
The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church Richfield Springs at 11:00 am with the Reverend Leo Potvin officiating. Interment with military honors will be later this spring in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Susquehanna ASPCA or the Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the compassion and patience he received from the many nurses, aides, staff and volunteers at Mountain Ridge on the second floor at Focus Rehabilitation and Nursing at Otsego.
