Obituary

HERKIMER-Malcolm Macneil Fagan, 87, of Osborne Hill Road, passed away on Sunday afternoon, August 7, 2005, at Valley Health Services, Inc. He was born on February 8, 1918, in Herkimer, son of the late Albert Lansing and Henrietta Macneil Fagan. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School and earned a bachelor of science degree at Niagara University. On August 7, 1943, he married the former Madeline Helmer in Arkville, New York. They have resided in Herkimer since. For twenty years, Mr. Fagan worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1980. He also operated several small businesses. In the 1950s, when he was unable to find someone to do a small printing job, Mr. Fagan bought a press and taught himself letterpress printing. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. For thirty-three years, he was a member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 B.P.O.E. He was also a member of the Amalgamated Printers Association. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-two years, Madeline; four children, Keith H. Fagan of Vienna, VA, Diane L. Fagan Affleck of Andover, MA, Sara M. Fagan of Marlborough, MA, and Brant M. Fagan of LaFayette; his son-in-law James Affleck and daughter-in-law Mary Jane Abt-Fagan; one sister, Clare V. Fagan of Albany; a brother, Thomas A. Fagan and his wife Anne of Bow, NH; eight grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Albert K. Fagan, and a sister, Madeleine Whalen. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor of Saint Francis de Sales Church will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will take place at a later time and at the convenience of the family. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday evening (today) from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
