HERKIMER-Manfred Gustav Schroeder age 71 of Steuben Hill Road passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon March 25, 2013 in Faxton-Saint Lukes Medical Center, New Hartford. He had the comfort of his loving family by his side.
He was born on September 14, 1941 in Danzing, Germany, son of the late Gustav F. and Ida Koschnik Schroeder. Manfred came to the United States with his family, was raised in Herkimer and graduated from Herkimer High School. He furthered his education attending Mohawk Valley Community College. For three years he worked as a radio technician for the General Electric Company in Utica.
On April 26, 1962 he entered the US Navy. He proudly served until July 9th, 1965 when he was honorably discharged attaining the rank of E-4.
On July 20, 1974 he was united in marriage with the former Maria Teresa Balcarcel in Herkimer. Mr. Schroeder had a strong belief in God and was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer.
In his leisure time he enjoyed tinkering with electronics especially Ham Radios. To all who knew him he will always be remembered as sincere, simple caring man who faced life with a positive outlook. He will greatly missed by his friends and family.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of thirty-nine years Maria, one son David Schroeder, a sister, Edeltraut Salewski of Herkimer, a grandchild, Mason Britow of Rome, many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Mr. Schroeder will be on Monday April 1st, at 11:00 am in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend Ann Zimmerman, pastor officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by the United States Navy will take place later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
