MOHAWK – Margie Evelyn Jones, age 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 18, 2022 at her home. The youngest of five children, she was born on October 19, 1923, in the town of Oppenheim, daughter of the late Sidney and Matie (Richards) Voorhees. Raised in the rural areas of Oppenheim and Salisbury Center, she graduated from Dolgeville High School with the class of 1941. Upon finishing high school Margie went to work as a secretary for Daniel Green Shoe Factory in Dolgeville. It was there that she met Robert Jones. They fell in love and six months later they were married on December 6, 1941. They shared a loving and devoted union of44 years of his passing on July 30, 1985. Margie took pride in her home and caring for her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, canning and decorating as well as putting scrapbooks and albums together.
Margie attended the Universalist Church in Herkimer, was actively involved in the church school programs and performed secretarial duties. She later attended the First Baptist Church in Herkimer continuing her devotion as a volunteer at the monthly dinners and rummage sales as well as volunteered with meals on wheels at Midtown Apt. For a while she also drove a school bus for Herkimer, enjoying the interaction with the children. In the summer months she enjoyed her trips to Keyser Lake and family times spent there.
Margie lived her life in a quiet, humble way leaving a legacy of love to be cherished by her devoted family and friends
Surviving are her daughter Diana Higgins, a grandson Steven Higgins and his wife Martha, great-grandsons, Nicholas Higgins and his wife Rachel, great-great-grandson, Asher, Zackery Higgins, and his wife Ashley, a special niece, Grethen Young along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Carl and Herman Voorhees, Delida Perkins and Martha Brill.
A special thanks to Bridget Jones who loving cared for Margie allowing her to be as independent as she could.
Calling hours and funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Service will follow immediately at 11:30. In the Funeral Home
