Obituary

MOHAWK: Marion Janette (Nettie) Dury, age,86, formerly of Walnut Street, Mohawk and most recently of Folts Road, East Herkimer, where she resided with her daughter, passed away on Thursday morning, September 18, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital, with her loving family at her side. Nettie was born on September 25, 1927, in Herkimer, the daughter of Lyman Mosher and Gladys Rice Mosher. She was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Herkimer High School. She was united in marriage with Walter John Dury on May 29, 1948 in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer with the Reverend Fred Cotnam officiating. In 1955 they made their permanent home in Mohawk. They shared a loving union of almost 65 years, until Walter's death on May 2, 2013. At one time, Nettie worked for the New York Telephone Company, as a switchboard operator. However, Nettie preferred being a homemaker and made a warm, loving and cozy home for her family. She was a gentle, compassionate and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchild, extended family and friends. Nettie enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and needlework. She was a gifted baker and cook, and delighted in surprising her family members or friends with some of their favorite cookies, a cake or pie. She was a talented seamstress and frequently used her creative skills to make a costume, sew on a merit badge, shorten pants or sew a ball gown, many times on short notice, but she could always be counted on to complete the task on time. Nettie made many clothes for her family throughout the years, as well as many clown costumes for Walter, who was a member of the Ziyara Zanies Clown Unit. She even sewed bridesmaid gowns for a close friends wedding. Nettie was a patient teacher while handing down her baking, cooking and sewing skills to her daughter and granddaughter. Nettie enjoyed going for rides in the country and stopping for ice cream along the way. She was an avid reader and took much pleasure in trips to the library or Barnes and Noble. Nettie was always ready to support a worthy cause and crocheted or knitted many lap robes for local nursing homes, hat for chemotherapy patients at an infusion center and donated homemade baked goods for fundraisers. She possessed many artistic abilities and was a gifted painter and delighted in painting the crafts and carvings that Walter had created. She participated in many craft shows over the years, with Walter. Nettie and Walter shared a love for the outdoors and passed this on to their children. They enjoyed traveling with their family, camping and picnicking at many state parks, and in the Adirondacks. Their favorite campgrounds were at Northhampton Beach on the Sacandaga River. Nettie also enjoyed trips with her family to Maine and Vermont. Nettie and Walter created many happy memories with their family on their camping trips and other travels. They spent many happy hours enjoying the company of their family and friends, sitting around a campfire laughing, joking and reminiscing about the "good old days". Nettie will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Nettie is survived by one daughter, Deborah and her husband Eugene DeRusso of East Herkimer, one son, Bradford Dury and Suzie of Ilion, a sister-in-law, Gloria Dury, of East Herkimer, a brother-in-law Ralph Wollaber, of Herkimer, and her beloved granddaughter, the light of her life, Sara Lassiter, of Brooklyn. She also leaves several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Nettie also leaves behind her special friends, Chuck Sterling and Ruth and Gene Blaise. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Joyce Moyer and her Husband Charles, Eunice Dodge and her husband Wayne, Eleanor Wollaber and Hilda Mosher. She was also preceded in death by her brother Charles (Skip) Mosher and her sister-in-law Edna Edick and her brother-in-law, Fredrick Edick.
