HERKIMER - Marion Rose Pollak peacefully departed this life and entered into eternal life on October 5, 2017 at the age of 96 after a brief illness. Her loving family was at her side.
Marion was born June 14, 1921 in College Point, Queens, a daughter of the late Herbert and Rose Latz. She was educated in NYC schools. On June 16, 1943 Marion enlisted in the U S Navy W.A.V.E.S, Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service. She received her basic training at Hunter College, NY and her advanced training at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ. After completion of her training she was stationed at Naval Air Station Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn. It was during this time fate stepped in and she met her husband, John Pollak, who was also enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. On August 19, 1944, Marion and John were married in College Point, NY. They shared 56 years together until Johns passing in 2000.
After her military service Marion came to Herkimer with her husband and it was here where they raised their three children. For the majority of her life she was a stay- at- home mom. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church and participated in many of the churchs activities. In addition to Pastor Ann Zimmermann, Marion was very close to and loved Phyllis and Rich Becker, Rose and Ron Snow, Harriett Neff.
Marion was a proud member of the Leatherstocking Waves, the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the Women of the Sea Services, a veterans organization. She was extremely patriotic and loved this great nation of ours dearly. Marion enjoyed puzzle books, playing cards and bingo, watching TV crime shows, cooking and baking. She loved the color purple, anything Tigger, and travelling to visit relatives. We are sure her witted bluntness of telling it like it was her opinion that everyone was entitled to her opinion and her famous take a hike will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew and loved this strong, exceptional woman.
Marion is survived by three loving sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne of Herkimer, John of Kingsport, TN and Daniel and his wife Nancy of Herkimer. She will be greatly missed by her adored grandchildren Kelly Sollozo and husband Tony of Perry, GA, Jessie Lynn Liles and husband Geoff of Garland, TX, Tina Campanella and husband Jeff of McKinney, TX, Carrie Pollak of Plano, TX, John Pollak and wife Carrie of Ithaca, NY, James Pollak and wife Sarah of Spencer, NY, and Marissa Marino and her fiance Britton Tarris of Herkimer. She also leaves her precious great-grandchildren Erin Liles, Tony and Callie Campanella, Cadra Beadles, and Charlotte and Elijah Pollak. Marion also had several nieces and nephews, Barbara Marquissee and husband Gordon, Patricia Colburn, James Colburn and wife Judy, and Donna Wheet and husband Brent. She also leaves a special friend, Iva Kast and her hairdresser, Selma Profitt whom she was very close to. In addition, Marion leaves her Galinsky Apartments family where she happily resided for the past ten years.
Besides her parents, and husband, John Marion was predeceased by her brother, Herbert Jr.
The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. to receive relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday in the funeral home at 10:00 am. Pastor Ann M. Zimmerman will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be in Oak Hill at a later date.
The Pollak Family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of St. Lukes Hospital where Marion received exceptional care this past week. Especially the ICU and sixth floor staff for their compassion and companionship. The dedication they have for their patients and career is to be commended. We were blessed to have all of you angels taking care of our Ma and Nonnie.
