Obituary

HERKIMER - Marjorie M. Brazie Barscz, formerly of Westwood Drive, passed away on Monday morning, July 18, 2011 in Valley Health Services Inc.She was born in Deposit, NY, daughter of the late Royal and Ida Hughs Brazie. Mrs. Barscz was a graduate of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health and a Master of Science Degree with a major in counseling from Syracuse University. She received a Master of Science Degree in Ministry from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, OH.She worked in many areas of nursing; including staff nurse and acting supervisor at the Methodist Hospital where she prepared the first emergency burn set up for the hospital. She worked in both basic and developmental cardiac research laboratories in Knoxville, TN, taught blood oxygen analysis (VanSlyke method) to technicians and assisted in starting the first cardiac catheterization laboratory and worked with the first team to perform open heart surgery in Knoxville, as well. She went on to become evening supervisor at Crouse-Irving Hospital, Syracuse, then as staff nurse in the post-cardiac intensive care unit in Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN. She was a consultant and later a team leader for the practical nursing MANPOWER Program in Syracuse and assisted in starting the practical nursing program in Herkimer. She retired from Herkimer County BOCES after many years as the Nursing Coordinator. Marjorie was asked by the New York State Education Department to write curriculum for Medical & Dental Assisting programs and received a grant to write curriculum for Activities Assistants. Additionally, she had permanent certification as a Teacher in Health, Practical Nursing, Nurse Assisting and Medical Assisting, Guidance Counseling, and as a School Administrator and Supervisor.Marjorie gave generously of her time and prayers and was an active member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. To all who knew her she will be remembered for her generous spirit and love and for the Lord, sharp wit and sense of humor and commitment to health and education. She will be greatly missed.She leaves behind a daughter, Laurie of Erie, PA, a step-son John Barscz Jr. and his wife Christina of Little Falls, a brother Cecil and his wife Terry Brazie of Deposit, a grandson, Michael Brazie, two great grandchildren, Kimberly and Bradley Barscz many nieces and nephews, caring friend and former daughter-in-law Cheryl Andrews of Herkimer. Besides her parents and husband John she was preceded in death by her son Christopher Barscz and her older brother Robert Brazie.Her family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer on Wednesday (today) from 2:00 until 4:00 pm. Funeral service will be on Thursday at 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer, with the Reverend Ann Zimmerman. Pastor will officiate. Interment will be on Friday at 11:30 am in the East Branch Cemetery, Hancock, NY.
