RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Marjorie H. Smith age 85 passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2016, in Focus at Otsego Nursing Home, Cooperstown. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
Marjorie was born on April 16, 1931, in the Town of Barton, NY, daughter of the late Fletcher J. and Mildred L. (Beebe) Hollenbeck. She was raised in Spencer and was a graduate of Spencer Central School before going on to earn her Bachelor's Degree as a Library Media Specialist from Geneseo State Teachers College. On December 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Leland K. Smith in the Spencer Methodist Church Parsonage. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-four years until his passing on December 19, 1995.
For twenty-five years Mrs. Smith worked as the librarian for the Richfield Springs Central School System. Before retiring in 1991, she inspired the lives of countless children through her passion for education in the library and as National Honor Society Advisor.
Marjorie had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. She was a member of the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany, the New York State Historical Society, and a committee member of Richfield Springs Troop # 14 Boy Scouts of America. Marjorie dedicated her life to her family. She was a strong, private person who enjoyed spending time at the lake with her family, researching genealogy, caring for her flower gardens and lawns, bird watching and traveling with her husband.
Surviving are her four children, Michelle D. Woytowich and Ralph Perry of Herkimer, Roger J. Smith and his wife Tammy of Bloomville, Julie M. Solomon of Norwich, Bradley R. Smith and his wife Susanne of Richfield Springs, a brother-in-law Stephen Smith of Spencer, thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours for Mrs. Smith will be held on Friday, September 23rd from 4:00 until 7:30 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 11:00 am in the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home, 56 North Main Street, Spencer, NY. The family will be present at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home to receive family and friends one hour prior to the funeral service (10:00 to 11:00 am). Internment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Spencer. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the RSCS Educational Foundation or the Richfield Springs Village Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
