HERKIMER - Marlene R. Smith, 79, of Osborne Hill Road, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, August 10, 2015, in her home. She had the comfort of her family by her side. She was born on July 9, 1936, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Ira W. and Edna Mae Bowman Jackson. A lifelong Herkimer resident she attended Herkimer High School. On December 26, 1953, she married John C. Smith in Christ Episcopal Church. They enjoyed a devoted union of 57 years until his passing on September 23, 2011. Mrs. Smith had a strong faith in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer where she served on the St. Mary's Guild and was past president of the Auxiliary of the Herkimer County Home and volunteer of the homes activities. Marlene has many interests she played the piano and the accordion, enjoyed camping at Moffits beach, bowling and at one time belonged to the Mohawk Valley Square Dancers. She will be remembered as an outgoing person who enjoyed life and being with family and friends. Her family was her pride and joy. The times spent with them were cherished memories. Surviving are two sons, Jack L. Smith of Herkimer, Michael Smith and his wife Missy of Fort Herkimer, two daughters and their husbands, Kathaleen and Richard Ervin of Little Falls, and Michele and William Mlinar of East Herkimer, one brother Gerald Jackson and his companion Ann Paraka of Little Falls, seven grandchildren, Koren Scanlon and her husband Shawn, Eric Ervin, Tiffany Gorman and her husband Scott, Kristin Lee and her husband Darren, Ira Michael Smith and his wife Camille, Neil Mlinar and Olivia Mlinar and eight great-grandchildren, Riley and Brielle Scanlon, Gabrielle, Scott, and Callie Gorman, Abigail and Carter Lee. Besides her parents and husband John, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Donald and Alan Jackson. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Saturday, from 10:00 am until noon. Funeral service will take place on Saturday 1t 1:00 p.m. in Christ Episcopal Church Herkimer. The Reverend Jill Stellman, Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Middleville Cemetery. Expression of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Christ Episcopal Church Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care, Meta Lyon and Mykala Miller for their care and compassion during Marlene's illness.
