HERKIMER Martha I. Briggs, age 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica. Her family was there to comfort her during her passing.
She was born on July 24, 1938, the only daughter of the late Benjamin and Edna (Staton) Griffith. A lifelong area resident she was educated in Utica and at the age of 60 obtained her GED for which she was most proud.
On November 16, 1957, she was united in marriage to Edward H. Briggs Sr. in Jordanville. Through the years she had worked for various companies including, G E, Dufold Manufacturing, Dandy Donuts and for over thirteen years as a Herkimer Crossing Guard. She retired in 2008. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting crocheting, puzzles, reading and watching oldwestern movies. In her younger days she enjoyed skating at the rink in Richfield Springs.
Martha was a joy to be around, she would light up a room with her warm smile and voice. Christmas was her favorite time of year to be with family which was most important in her life. She will be remembered for her kindness and will live in the hearts of those her knew her best.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Edward Sr., two sons, Edward Briggs Jr. and wife Debbie, Daniel Briggs and Wendy Rizza all of Herkimer, three daughters, Laura Waterbury of Herkimer, Edna Louise Prosser of Mohawk and Brenda Briggs, of Herkimer, five brothers, Thomas Griffith, James Griffith and wife Dee, Benjamin Griffith and wife Faye all of Texas, Donald Griffith of Mohawk, and Bruce Griffith and wife Diane, of Westmoreland, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer will be on Monday at 5:00 pm. Calling hours in the funeral home will be from 2:00 until 5:00 pm prior to the service. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donation to The American Heart Assoc. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
