RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Martha Jane Eliasson, age 81, of Park Street passed away on Saturday February 13, 2021 in her home.
She was born at home on Parker St. on April 27, 1939, in Springfield, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late John Daniel and Madeline Ethelyn Paulk Mulcahy. She was raised and educated in different areas of the country. She enrolled in Quinnipiac University as an adult student where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree, graduating with Honors in 1986, and began her new career as a Social Worker. She worked in Connecticut for St Raphael Hospital, and as an EMT driver and in other Human Services jobs. After moving to New York State in 2000, she worked for the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) in Herkimer. She was a very strong advocate for the protection and care for the elderly. She volunteered in the Ombudsman Program, and started her own volunteer program called The Village Lighthouse.
Martha Jane loved the ocean and shared that love with her children and grandchildren with many trips to the seashore. She had very good sense of humor and was a very kind and caring person. She had a lifelong interest in gardening and she shared her produce with friends and neighbors. Her giant Weigela bush (pictured) was a great source of joy and pride, along with her peonies.
Surviving her are two sisters; Jean Alice Niemeyer, 90, of Dolgeville, NY and Ann Madelina Smith, 76, of Roanoke, VA, a daughter, Alice Adelia Curtis of Mohawk, NY and a son, Nils Walter Eliasson of Decatur, AL, and eight grandchildren; Elizabeth Warner, Sarah Martinelli, Michael Juliano, Derek Juliano, Leah Juliano, Brian Eiasson, Joseph Eliasson, and Robert Eliasson, and 3 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brother John Joseph Mulcahy and a daughter Elsa Dorothy JulianoMeyers and her former husband, Eric Walter Eliasson.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will not be any Calling Hours or Services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to any of the following organizations: RCIL for Senior Services, Herkimer, NY, Office for the Aging, Herkimer, NY, or RSVP Senior Volunteer Services at Catholic Charities in Ilion, NY.
