Martin “Dutch” Howard Comstock, Sr., 83, passed peacefully on April 9, 2026, at Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls, leaving behind a legacy defined by craftsmanship, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for automobiles.
Dutch was born on July 21, 1942, in Utica, NY, the son of the late Stanley and Elenora Comstock. He was raised and educated in Herkimer where he graduated from Herkimer High School, Class of 1960. After graduating Dutch proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960, to his honorable discharge in 1963. Following his service, his love for cars led him to Daytona Beach, where he worked for legendary NASCAR engine builder Ray Fox. That early immersion in high-performance automotive culture shaped what would become a lifelong pursuit.
Returning to Herkimer, Dutch established and operated his own body shop for over five decades. Known as a consummate “car guy,” he built a reputation not only for quality work but for an unmatched depth of knowledge. In the 1990s, he shifted his focus toward restoration, developing a successful business centered on classic cars and hot rods. His shop became a destination for enthusiasts who appreciated both the artistry and precision of his work.
Dutch was more than a tradesman—he was a collector, historian, and storyteller. His collection of automotive memorabilia, especially vintage signs, was something he took great pride in sharing with anyone willing to listen. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he continually refined his metal shaping skills to an expert level. In later years, he found immense satisfaction in teaching others, hosting seminars and open houses where he passed along his knowledge to the next generation.
Outside of the shop, Dutch found peace at his camp in Speculator, New York. There, he could often be found walking with his beloved Labrador retrievers—always two by his side—enjoying the quiet and simplicity of the outdoors.
He is survived by his son Marty Jr. and his wife Jaime Lynne, Whitesboro, NY, sisters Donna Ince-Lopez, Island, WA, Ardith Dersham, Syracuse, NY, granddaughter Kelsey Jean and step grandchildren Lain and Maddux Thompson, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dutch will be remembered for his sharp mind, skilled hands, and generous willingness to share what he knew. His impact lives on in the cars he restored, the people he taught, and the stories he told.
