MOHAWK - Martin J. Sarafin age 72 of Sarafin Road passed away unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon July 10, 2003 in his home.
He was born on August 23, 1930 at home in the town of Columbia, son of the late Martin J. Sr. and Mary Hugick Sarafin. A lifelong resident in the town of Columbia, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. Martins life was dairy farming. He owned and operated the Sarafin Dairy Farm until his retirement in 2000. For forty-seven years he was married to the former Marian Jouben.
A member of Saint Josephs Church Richfield Springs, he had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. At one time he had served as councilman on the Columbia town board. He was known for being an honest hard workingman who loved the outdoors. In his leisure time he enjoyed Deer and Turkey hunting. He was a friend to many and will be truly missed.
Surviving are two sons; Thomas and his wife Carla Sarafin of Richfield Springs, Martin J. Sarafin III of Liverpool, four daughters; Marsha and her husband Jeff Rooney of Chicago, IL, Mary and her husband Charles Hight of Mohawk, Sandra Sarafin and Elaine Sarafin both of Herkimer, five brothers; Charles Sarafin of FL, Joseph Sarafin of Jordanville, John Sarafin of Herkimer, Leon Sarafin and Paul Sarafin both of Richfield Springs, five sisters; Marian Staruck of Jordanville, Martha Stark of East Herkimer, Catherine Kryszczuk of Utica, Genevieve Buddle and Anna Szeflinski both of Richfield Springs, three grandchildren; Nolan Hight of Mohawk, Abigail and Sarah Rooney both of Chicago, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Martin was predeceased by a brother Stanley Sarafin.
Funeral service will be on Monday at 9:30 am in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Saint Josephs Church Richfield Springs. The Reverend Robert Shinos will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 until 5:00 pm.
