HERKIMER-Mary Agnes DeCoursey Burnop, age 93, of West German Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening July 24, 2011 in Valley Health Services Inc.
She was born on July 30, 1917, in Mohawk, daughter of the late George E. and Anna Volk DeCoursey. A lifelong area resident she was a graduate of Saint Francis deSales School, Herkimer High School and completed her education at cosmetology school. For fifteen years she worked in Saranac Lake then returning to this area to work for the Mohawk School Library, Mohawk data Science, Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce as well as and operating her own hair styling business. She retired in the 1980s.
Mary had a strong faith in God and was a member of St. Francis deSales Church in Herkimer. She was active within the community as a volunteer for various organizations. To those who knew her, they will never forget a caring, loving and hopeful person who enjoyed doing for others without seeking anything in return. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are two nephews, Arthur DeCoursey of Gloversville, William DeCoursey and his wife Carolyn of Herkimer, eight great nieces, nephews and several cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Emerson and William DeCoursey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday July 30th at 10:00 am in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in the church from 9:30 am until the start of the funeral at 10:00 am. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Saint Francis deSales Regional Catholic School. Envelopes will be available.
